A Day at a Museum

A field trip for Feral Kids’ Academy…….

We struck out this morning on journey of a lifetime. Well. Not really. Actually, we got up about 8am and got everyone dressed and loaded up in the car and headed down the road to destination unknown. Well, that’s not true either. I knew where we were going.

Instead of schoolwork today, I had planned a trip to our local museum amid several different errands that needed to be run. We first stopped at the bank and talked about writing checks and how they worked while we got a few blank checks printed out. Then, after a few text message exchanges, we drove over to pay for our moorage spot for our boat – a spot we intend to keep perpetually going forward.

Then it was a forty minute drive to our house on the other side of the county. We got in, did bathroom breaks, then had lunch while everyone sat in the living room (shivering – the heating system went out so it is freezing in there right now) while we watched the latest episode of Young Sheldon.

Then it was off again down the road to where our future purchase (pontoon boat) is stored, in what we affectionately call the “Boat Graveyard,” to take pics for the tow company. Then we jetted across town to the tow company. I went in while the kids stayed in the car and I spoke with a gentleman about towing the boat to the lake. It was iffy until he asked for the name of the seller. Apparently they grew up together in the same town all their lives.

Small towns, right?

Well, he looked up the file for the previous owner and they had towed the boat once before. They had all the dimensions, pictures of it being towed, etc. The man I spoke with assured me there was no problem with backing the boat into the water once we got to the lake.

So, with all the errands finished, we then ran back the way we came, and stopped at the local museum to get some “schoolin” in for the day. Normally, they would have spend the day doing classes and reading. But, today was a day to get out and about and learn some things about the local area.

The people at the museum were great. They were pleasant and had a scavenger hunt for the kids to do. We went through all the exhibits in no time, and the kids finished their hunt and also answered all their worksheet questions in record speed.

Everyone wanted to ride the elevator (we had previously taken the stairs), so we went back up the stairs so we could ride the elevator down. We got to the bottom and I started taking and organizing clipboards while, without realizing it, Elly (our 3 year old) walked out of the elevator. Before any of us knew it, the elevator doors shut and we started going back up to the second floor.

I could hear Elly yelling for us from the floor below. By the time we got back down to the first floor again, she was standing in front of the elevator with her arms crossed. Just waiting with a frown on her face.

It was almost as funny as her falling asleep this morning in her car seat while eating a banana.

Anyway, it was a pretty enjoyable trip. While the museum was a bit underwhelming (aren’t they all), I think the kids had fun and I know it was good for them to get out of their “sheltered homeschooling life” and interact a bit with the outside world.
