Little House in the Big Woods By Skye Veach

The book I read is called Little House in the Big Woods. It is written by Laura Ingalls Wilder and illustrated by Garth Williams. This book is about the Ingalls family and how they live in Wisconsin in 1871. The point of the story was to introduce the reader to the Ingalls family and what life was like for them. I liked this book because it was a funny historical fiction book.

In the beginning of the book we get to see how the Ingalls lived in 1871. The main characters in the story are: Pa, Ma, Mary, Laura and baby Carrie. They live in a log cabin 7 miles from the nearest town Pepin. They live on a ranch by a forest of maple trees and they have cows. But life on the farm is very hard because they have to work to grow their own food and sew their own clothes. And they have to raise crops to sell for money.

In the middle of the book Pa takes the whole family to the city of Pepin where all of the kids had wanted to go for a long time. They get to see what it is like in the town of Pepin. Pepin is near the ocean, has dusty roads and no cars. When they get there they go into the store to get some fabric for Ma and Pa also does some trading of animal skins. The family only goes to town about once a year. It is a special treat for them to get to go town. Later in the story while Pa is gone, Ma and the girls walk out to the barn to feed the cow. To their surprise there was a bear in the barn. Ma slapped the bear in the face! Then they all ran back into the house. All of the family was shocked that the bear did nothing when Ma hit the bear.

Near the end of the book Pa went hunting to get meat for winter. He sat in a tree near a river because he knew that was where the animals drink water from. It was beautiful with all sorts trees and birds. But he did not know that he would get distracted by the earth’s beauty. So when he saw the deer he did not shoot it. He just looked at it. Then it was starting to get late and he could not see on his way home. He thought that a stump was a bear. Pa was very mad that he did not get the deer meat. It was a big deal because winter was coming and Pa needed to get more meat for winter. This was my least favorite part of then book because Pa got distracted so he did not bring home deer meat for the winter.

I enjoyed this story because it was funny and about history. My most favorite part of the book was when Ma and the girls went to put the cow in the barn but Ma thought the cow was a bear and she slapped it. I liked this part of the book because it was funny. But I think that the kids in the story have a much more harsh life and they get very bored on Sundays because they could not work. And they didn’t have any phones or any tablets to keep them busy. I think that it would have felt very boring in l871 because they had to just work from sun up to sundown and they did not get to play very much. I really liked this book because it showed me how people lived in 1871. In conclusion, I would recommend this book to kids who like historical fiction adventure books.
