Lord of the Flies

by Jeremiah veach

The book I read is called Lord of the Flies. It is written by William Golding and the illustrator is Lois Lowry. The story takes place on an uncharted island and the three main characters are Ralph, Piggy, and Jack. They are trapped on an island and must find a way to get back to their home in England. I think that this story is good because they are on an island that no one else had ever lived on so it would be scary.

In the beginning of the story, they were going on a school trip, but their plane got shot down and they crashed landed on a deserted island. They had very little food and water with them on the island. One of the first things they decided to do was make a big fire and then make a big signal out of sticks that said help. Some of the boys started feeling sick. And some of the boys were even a little dizzy and tired from not having enough food or water.

In the middle of the book, the boys had to start figuring out how to survive. They had to make a shelter to protect them from wild animals and from the weather. The first shelter they built was in the hole of a palm tree that had fallen. The walls were palm leaves with branches to hold it together. But that shelter kept breaking so they moved to a different shelter in a nearby cave. The cave was big and flat enough on the inside where the boys could lay down and sleep. To keep the cave warm and to keep animals from coming into the cave, the boys had to keep a fire always going.

They ran out of the food that was left on the plane, so they had to figure out how to hunt to get food. One night, a wild boar came into their camp looking for food. The boys were terrified. But it also gave them an idea. The boys decided to make a trap. They decided to try and bribe it in the trap with fish they caught when it went in the trap, they would stab it with their spears. After they killed the bore. And then they did not have to hunt for food anymore. they also solved their problem by setting a trap to catch more of the bores. I think that they learned about a lot of survival skills.

By the end of the story, the boys were working together to find food and water and helping each other with the shelter. They would always have someone watching to make sure no animals got in the cave. They started to lose hope because they were there for six months and hadn’t seen anyone. But one afternoon after they had finished cutting wood for the fire they saw a ship in the distance. They were all very excited and they made the fire as big as they could so the boat would notice them. And the boat did! They were rescued. The boys were so happy to get off of the island and get to eat a real meal. They were saved by a British naval officer and he told them that he would take them home.

I would definitely recommend this book to readers that like adventure stories because this book has a lot of challenges that the characters have to face! At first I thought it was about a person that could control flies. But I found out very quick that that is not what it is about. One thing I would change about the story is how the plane got shot down. If I had writing the story, I think the plane should have been hijacked because then all the kids would have survived and not died in the crash. So then they would have had more help and maybe all the kids would have been able to escape the island quicker. Something I learned from this book was how important it is to be prepared because you never know what might happen. I also liked this book more than some other books I have read because it is just a group of kids almost the whole time and it is about survival with no parents. In conclusion, I really liked this book and would give it a 7 out 10.
